A self-described “work in process, and hopefully in progress”; even after 45 years, Lew is still “amazed” that he actually graduated with the Class of 1981, or as he refers to it; “in the company of heroes”.
Post graduation, Lew served as a Cavalry Officer had duty assignments at Ft. Benning, Ft. Knox, Ft.Campbell, Panama, and Germany. At 1-1 Cavalry in Germany, Lew’s platoon was “top gun” and later as S-1, most “combat ready” S-1 “shop” in 1AD.
Military schools included Airborne, Ranger (as a Cadet-go figure), Air Assault, Mortar Officer and Motor Officer training.
It was in Germany, playing on an all-European select side rugby tournament in 1984 that Lew met the love of his life; Danna Demetre. Married in 1985 at AOAC Ft. Knox, Lew’s last active duty assignment was as S-3 Air and Company Commander for B Co. 2-77 Armor.
While still in the USAR, Lew began his civilian career in Silicon Valley as a sales engineer, and later product engineer, applications, product marketing, marketing, and sales for Avantek/ Hewlett Packard and M/A-Com. In the mid-90’s, Lew got his first taste of a start-up, taking a little semiconductor component manufacturer from <$1M in revenue to >$60M in less than three years. Since then, he has used his product development, marketing, sales, business development & government relations experience in the semiconductor industry, from large-scale enterprises to eight successful start-ups, with revenue growth from zero to $300MM +. His companies have raised in excess of $1.5B in (VC, PE) capital. He has also served on numerous private company boards.
What Lew is proudest of is his wife and family. Danna is an accomplished speaker and author of books focused on women’s health from a Christian perspective. His daughters Jamie, Jill, his son “Seven” (as in Lewis VII), and Jesse, and their spouses; Mario, Danny, Alison and Arianna. And their GrandBeauties; Madison, Renee, Giuliana, Betsy Lou and Beth. GrandStuds include Landon, Joe, Demetre and Bronson. Currently, Lew, Danna and their Great Pyredoodle, Bella Lu, split their time between their residence in San Antonio and his job as a senior executive of Atomica Corporation in Santa Barbara, CA.
Lew still is very involved in the Rugby community, having served as head coach of two successful high-school programs in San Diego. He is currently the co-founder and chairman of the Army West Point Rugby Alumni foundation, and secretary of the USMC Old Breed Rugby Football club.
